During 5th grade ELA, we started our own version of March Book Madness to introduce students to some different 5th grade level texts. We watch a preview of two books each day and vote on our favorite of the day. The students have been loving this and have already been asking if they can check these books out in the library!

One Stoplight Town is a story about people from a town so small that you might drive through without taking a second look. But if you stopped for just a moment, you might see a boy and girl fall in love, a cantankerous grocery store owner coping with change, someone returning home while someone else thinks about leaving, a beauty queen and a drum major striking up a friendship, and a handy(wo)man taking it all in while she fixes what is broken. These stories are filled with fun characters, lots of humor, plenty of heart, and the theme that change comes for us all, whether we are ready or not.
For two weeks, 7th grade ELA classes hosted Lindsay Bauer, Executive Director of the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center, as their Artist in Residence. Lindsay led students through the Page to Stage Workshop process, breaking down novels and books of their choice. Students analyzed the pieces for story arcs and character development. Each student worked on writing their own play, learning how to take printed text and turn it into live action. Each class had three scripts selected, then students worked together to produce those scripts. With the normal Iowa weather challenges, this gave students roughly 2 1/2 days to write and 2 1/2 days to produce their short plays. The adventure culminated in the World Premiere of their works on the big stage at the Arts and Convention Center on Wednesday, February 26.
