5th Grade ELA has been researching controversial topics! We started by researching if Chocolate Milk should be served in schools or not. Students learned how to research both sides of an argument, suspending their personal biases, before deciding which side they agree with. We then moved on to the next controversial topics, where students got to choose which one they wanted to research. Should we support or boycott zoos? or Are youth extreme sports worth the risk or not? Students researched both viewpoints for their topic, and then participated in a debate against their classmates! We emphasized how debating with someone is not arguing, but more of a persuasion. We also discussed how using the Leader In Me Habit #5 (Seek first to understand, then to be understood) plays a huge role in debates. Listening first, before responding appropriately. Students did a fantastic job debating on these issues!

Melanie Carlson noticed Hermione Lebert, Dylan Brown, and Treveyon Wilson crossing Hwy 1 very safely the other day. They were making eye contact with the crossing guard, looking more than twice, following directions, being very good leaders and role models. Melanie got them gift certificates from the Dairy Bar! Way to go Treveyon, Dylan, and Hermione!

What a great way to end the day! Eighth graders visited the Jefferson County courthouse today for a tour and then a mock trial. This past week in social studies they were getting ready in their roles for a mock trial. We are so appreciative the students got to experience this as a live mock trial with our own newscast team, Judge Myron Gookin, lawyers, witnesses, and audience. Well done FMS students. We are so proud of you. Special thanks to our eighth grade team and Mr. Blakely for making this all happen for our students. What a wonderful experience!

So MANY amazing things about today! 👏Teamwork, service, communication, goal setting, leadership, learning how to rake, and competing BIG projects for others. What a Bucket Filler for us! 🪣💪 We are so grateful to all the businesses who donated money for every student and staff member to have a shirt today. The shirts were designed by our student leadership team! We can't thank our community enough for the waters that were donated and the businesses that allowed us to come help serve them. We live in such a wonderful community! We are so grateful that our students were able to finally give back for everything the community does for our school district. Can't wait to do it again❤️

And we are off! FMS students met as a whole team this morning to get a group photo and go over community day expectations. Carissa led the students this morning by reviewing why we serve and the expectations. Everyone is now headed out to serve our community who does so much for us. What a great day! Look for more pictures to come throughout the day!

What a great opportunity it was yesterday to have members of Aeron Lifestyle Technology visit with the Lift shop class. They explained their business, the roles they play, how they became interested in engineering and the future possibilities the students could explore. Aeron would like to make this a regular visit (at least two times if not three times a year) with the rotation of lift classes. They would like to visit Mr. Allison's class with 3d printing. Lastly they are checking to see if we could take students on a field trip to see their business and the 3d printers in action. What a win-win for the students, business, and community👏
