Yes, Virginia, FHS does have an Esports team.
Just as Virginia’s question about Santa Claus was answered in an editorial on September 21, 1897, it is very fitting that 123 years later, FHS can answer her updated question affirmatively with yes, FHS does have an Esports team.
It has been a slow, but steady journey, but beginning about two years ago, staff members in the Fairfield School District began the work of starting an Esports Club. With passion and persistence, both staff and students have worked hard to become an established club. By sharing their story and promoting this concept through positive action, support from the school and community has really made this dream come true.
With a very soft opening, a few students were invited to join this fledgling club and play in a couple Fortnite tournaments. Growing students and titles, last year added many more students and a new excitement. Parent volunteers, as well as staff volunteers worked to create an opportunity to benefit students with a place to come together and share their interests in avenues that didn’t exist previously. As the year continued, FCSD Esports students earned college scholarships and national recognition. Relationships were built with students from other schools as well as other states. The club fostered a civic duty as students worked to raise money to improve the equipment they were able to play on. This passion caught fire in several circles and even through the tough times in our community during the pandemic, sponsorships developed and financial support came in to allow the club to purchase new computers. With the sponsorships and the positive communication with FHS admin, an Esports Arena is now being developed.
Even though this arena is in the beginning stages, there is much excitement about the future. Furniture has been donated, streaming services and video equipment are being provided and funded and support is coming in all shapes and sizes. As the school year begins, the club is currently fielding a Varsity Smash Bros team, and they are currently in the fall season sponsored by the newly formed state association, the Iowa High School Esports Association. This season will complete in late October or early November, culminating with a State Champion.
Last year, even with a fluid general roster, there was consistently about 30 active students at any point in the school year. Again, this survey has been sent out to find students with an interest level for the 20-21 school year.
If you are interested in supporting these students, they compete each Thursday at 4:00 PM in the FHS Esports Arena. Spectators are welcome.
