GPAEA Battle of the Books Competition
The Fairfield Middle School sent two teams to compete in the Great Prairie Area Education Agency Battle of the Books competition at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center on April 8th and 9th. FMS 6th graders competed against 24 SE Iowa teams on Monday and missed competing in the final round by only 1 point. FMS 7th and 8th graders competed on Tuesday against 24 teams and again missed competing in the final round by only 4 points. The team members read and studied 30 books to prepare for the contest.
Teams were allowed one hour to complete a 60-question, short answer test over the 30 books. Five teams qualified to advance to the oral round where teams were challenged with additional questions. While the tests scored, students enjoyed a presentation by Iowa author, Sarah Prineas. Students were able to purchase books by the author and have them autographed.
FMS 6th graders who competed on Monday were: Una Carter, Samu Shrestha, Gwen Sutherland, Annabelle Teel, Eliza Wajahat, and Emma Wendland. Grace Lu was sick and unable to attend.
