Washington and Lincoln 3rd Grade Genre Podcasts
A Professional Development Unit using Understanding by Design
by Tina Breen
Third grade students from Washington and Lincoln schools recently completed podcasts demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of genres. This project was a result of Wednesday late start professional development for Fairfield staff. The genre unit was created using Understanding by Design. With collaborative work between Mrs. Hoskins, Ms. Smith, Mrs. Hutchings, Mrs. Innis and Mrs. Breen a unit that included studying various kinds of genres, writing and reading scripts, recording with Garageband (software), and producing a podcast with music and photos was designed and implemented with sixty-six 3rd grade students!
A special thank you goes to the staff members who helped with the supervision while each group recorded their podcast. Those people assisting from Washington were: Mrs. Lyons, Mrs. Ham, Mr. Willoughby, Mrs. LaVan, Mrs. Ellis, and Mrs. Kaufman. People assisting from Lincoln include Mrs. Hunderdosse and Mrs. Taylor.

Following are the genre podcasts. The podcasts will play with photos using the software iTunes. Click on each link and you will be prompted to either download the podcast or open in another program (iTunes). If you would like to download the free software, you can do so at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
To view the podcasts as Quicktime files, access the link at Fairfield iTools.
