Summer Enrichment Opportunities
by Sue McCracken
Fairfield Elementary students have the opportunity to be involved in summer school classes. There are two types of classes:
Remediation:
Students needing extra reading or math help to
get a boost
before entering the new school year have already been invited
to attend remediation classes. Parents are strongly encouraged
to
enroll their student for this session if you received a letter of
recommendation in the mail. These classes will be held at Pence
Elementary from July 27 through August 14.
Enrichment Classes:
Want your child to have some exciting fun those last weeks of summer when they are bored being home, finished with ball games and camps? Then consider the district's enrichment classes being offered the weeks of July 27th, August 3rd, and August 10th. There is a large selection of classes which include: podcasting, dutch oven cooking, tadpole camp, finger knitting and advanced knitting, Tibetan sand painting, paper sculpture, French, movie making, poetry, outdoor adventure skills; prairie, woods, and water; cards, marbles and more; puppetry and theatre games, and digital photography. Wow - what an awesome list to choose from!
Flyers were sent home with students in grades K - 4 the first week of May, and classes are now open to fifth graders as well, so check those back packs if you haven't seen the flyers and registration forms. Each five day class is $50, three day classes are $30. There are quite a few open spots for most of the classes, but make sure you turn in your form as soon as possible to assure your child gets enrolled in the class of their choice. All classes will be at Pence Elementary except for the three at Jefferson County park. Students in those classes will begin at Pence and be bused to the park.
Transportation for both remediation and enrichment classes is provided for any city or rural bus student, and lunches are provided if parents wish to take advantage of the opportunity (free and reduced prices apply - otherwise lunches are $1.85).
This is a great opportunity for learning and fun all wrapped up in one package! It will be a nice transition back to regular classes beginning August 26. Please take some time to review the classes with your student. Hope to see many students!
