Kindergarten is Learning "Hands-On!"

In Kindergarten we learn by doing. Even handwriting practice can be a hands-on activity. We use a handwriting workbook to practice strokes and letter formation with paper and pencil. We practice writing in the writing center using dry erase markers. We even practice making letters with shaving cream on our desks. By doing all of these things to teach the same concept, each child can learn to write letters properly in the way that works best for them. Some children learn best by listening, some learn best by watching, and some learn best by moving their bodies. These are called our learning modalities.
The project with shaving cream is a fun way for the students to learn the movements that their pencils need to make to form letters. The kindergarten students loved this messy, but effective, handwriting lesson. It was a great reward for the boys and girls after their first full week of learning!
