Mt. Pleasant author visits Lincoln School

by Sue McCracken

8-26-08

Author Jenny Braulick visited Lincoln School Tuesday morning to talk with our students about farming in the past and present and to read her book Kristy and the Secret of Yesterday Farm.  A former teacher, Ms. Braulick was able to talk with the students about writing:  how she got the idea for her book, the years it took to formulate the story in her mind, and the multiple times she revised it before it was ready to publish.  She also showed students artifacts of the recording industry (a 33.3 record, eight-track tape, cassette tape, and CD), and then related the progress in that industry to what has happened on our farms, particularly with the way the fields are tilled, planted, and harvested.  The setting for the book is Mt. Pleasant's Old Settlers and Threshers' Reunion, with a young girl learning about her ancestors and their farming methods as she visits the reunion with her grandfather.

Student interest was high thanks to Ms. Braulick's animated talk.

Students were given the opportunity to order books before Ms. Braulick's visit and had them personally signed following the classroom sessions.  This type of activity helps students meet several of the district's learning benchmarks in language arts, reading, and social studies.

Please take a moment and ask your student to tell you about Ms. Braulick's visit!
