Celebrating Earth Day
by Sue McCracken
If you ask any of our Libertyville students what Earth Day means, hopefully some will say, "Planting flowers, picking up trash, and weeding and mulching!" The afternoon of April 29 students gathered in their school families to do all of those activities. Students eagerly pulled the weeds in the flower beds which surround the school building as well as those in the back garden area. Once the weeds were pulled, students hauled mulch to cover the beds.
Families also planted a variety of flowers (purchased by the ACTION team from the high school horticulture classes) in planter boxes located in various areas throughout the city of Libertyville.
Prior to the Earth day activities, students all watched a video describing the events leading to the holiday and learned of ways they could help protect the environment. These Earth Day activities are one way we meet our district's social studies learning goals of learning more about the world we all share and the roles we play in protecting our environment.
