Fairfield Athletics
By Brad Rose
Fairfield Community School District has 18 different athletic programs to offer its students. In the fall, both middle school and high school football, cross country; volleyball, and high school girls swimming are offered. During 2007-2008, the FHS football team qualified for and competed in the Iowa High School Class 3A State Playoffs. Girls Volleyball won the Southeast Conference, boys and girls cross country were both conference runner ups.
Winter Athletics
Winter season is less hectic in the athletic world
at FHS, but the excitement is still there. Fairfield offers
middle school and high school boys and girls basketball,
wrestling. Although there is not a boys swimming team,
Fairfield Community School District has a cooperative sharing
agreement with Ottumwa High School. The middle school
basketball teams split the winter season. There is a
7th grade boys basketball team, 7th grade
girls basketball team, 8th grade boys basketball team,
and 8th grade girls basketball team. The
7th grade boys/8th grade girls compete during
the first half of the season, and the 8th grade
boys/7th grade girls compete the second half of the
season. Middle school wrestling consists of both
7th and 8th grade jointly during the entire
winter season.
High school basketball and wrestling are sure to provide you with plenty of evenings of excitement. The boys basketball team competed in the first round of the 2008 Iowa High School Boys State Playoffs in Des Moines. Following many scheduled and rescheduled wrestling meets, the boys wrestling team left many of their opponents wondering what hit them. Two senior wrestlers competed in the 2008 IHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in February at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Spring
Athletics
Following the long, bitterly cold winter season,
comes the spring sports. Students in Fairfield have many
opportunities to participate in athletics in the months of March,
April, May and June. There are middle school boys and girls
track teams, high school boys and girls track teams, boys and girls
high school tennis, boys and girls soccer, and boys and girls high
school golf. Fairfield tennis was the home of the 2007 IHSAA
State Boys Individual Tennis Champion and the 2007 IGHSAU State
Girls Individual Tennis Runner-up. Those two individuals
teamed up and brought home the Coed Dual Team 1st Place
Trophy. In 2007, Fairfield Boys Golf was the State
Runner-up.
Summer
Athletics
In May the summer sports begin with
Softball and Baseball starting practice the first two weeks. Our
Softball program has a long tradition of SCC titles and Coach Bob
Bradfield is 24th all time in wins for the state of Iowa.
Josh Allison and the Trojan Baseball squad return some key players
and look to contend for the SCC title this summer.
